The long-awaited 9.1 Chains of Domination patch is arriving soon™! For those of us filling in the current content drought by playing catch-up on our alts, hanging out in older content, playing other games, or wandering outside to touch some grass, this Shadowlands patch cannot come soon enough. It’s been nearly seven months since Shadowlands debuted, making this one of the longest pauses in major content releases.
While we wait around making faces out of the popcorn textures on our ceilings, let’s think about all the new content on the horizon. There is so much to be excited about for when this patch finally arrives!
1. New Covenant Chapters, Items, and Renown
The stories of our beloved covenants are expanding, giving players the opportunity to explore their Shadowlands home realm and learn more about the denizens they’ve allied with.
There are 40 additional Renown levels being added, bringing the total level of obtainable Renown to 80! Players with Renown 45 will obtain a new covenant-themed mount, and players with Renown 80 will be awarded a title for their heroic efforts. Each covenant is also getting its own covenant-themed Pepe costume! These delightful outfits for everyone’s favorite bird can be obtained at Renown 56, according to the information on the items used to create the costumes.
In addition to new mounts, new Pepe outfits, and new player titles, each covenant will receive new soulbinds and new transmog appearances. (I recently saw the new Venthyr appearances and immediately logged into the game to drop my fae friends. Just sayin’.)
2. New Raid: Sanctum of Domination
Heroes will adventure back into the Maw to face old friends and new foes in the Sanctum of Domination raid. This raid hosts ten bosses, including the infamous Terragrue, our old pal Kel’Thuzad, and the ever elusive banshee queen: Sylvanas Windrunner.
While no one on the PTR knows the true fate of Sylvanas, surely we can trust that Blizzard has something interesting in store for those who face and defeat the former Ranger-General of Silvermoon.
3. New Megadungeon: Tazavesh, the Veiled Market
Tazavesh is an eight-boss megadungeon set in a broker city. The encounters include a mailroom and an Infinite pirate dragon, so this is sure to be a neat experience for the heroes who brave the city of broker cartels!
4. New Zone: Korthia, City of Secrets
Korthia is a level 60 zone located in the In-Between. A wasteland in appearance, it somewhat captures different features from the Maw, Oribos, Revendreth, and Ardenweald - which makes for an interesting atmosphere. Its barren forests are filled with strange creatures such as cute rabbits called Gromits, new Devourer puppies, and lizard-birds known as Razorwings. There is also hidden quest in the zone that rewards players with a Razorwing mount upon completion!
5. Continuation of Anduin’s Story
This part turned out to be a whole other post entirely, so let’s just say for now that new things are bound to happen for and to Anduin and that we are all anticipating either his triumph or downfall. Either way, this is going to get interesting!
6. New Legendary: Rae’shalare, Death’s Whisper
We don’t know much about this bow yet aside from it being a drop from Sylvanas Windrunner in the Sanctum of Domination raid. What does “Rae’shalare” translate to? Will it need to be pried from Sylvanas’ cold, double-dead hands or does she simply leave it behind in a surprise chest when she flees? However this weapon is obtained, the lucky wielder of it is sure to make an impression.
7. New Mounts
There are a couple of incredible looking mounts that drop in the new raid. There is a black dragonhawk mount named Vengeance’s Reins that has a chance to be obtained by defeating Sylvanas. There is also a dark and ghostly warhorse mount, Sanctum Gloomcharger’s Reins, that looks like Blanchy, but darker and with better armor.
From the Veiled Market are four fiery disk-type mounts: Cartel Master’s Gearglider, Silver Gearglider, Tazavesh Gearglider, and Pilfered Gearglider.
Blizzard has also given us a list of new mounts to chase after in Korthia, such as Maelie the Wanderer and the Rampaging Mauler puppy. Mounts are obtainable from some rares and through new faction reputations. Similar to the Sanctum Gloomcharger is the Soulbound Gloomcharger that appears to be a gift from Ve’nari!
8. New Battle Pets
In addition to the new battle pets obtained via different sources added in 9.1, the Flawless Amethyst Baubleworm will be available for purchase at the cost of 10,000 pet charms. No, that isn’t a typo. Blizzard Watch has a great article about this expensive worm and how players can save up the 10,000 charms needed to purchase it. Check out the article here.
Good news, pet collectors: The cap on how many pets you can currently own is being removed, meaning players no longer need to save up to purchase the Interdimensional Pet Portal item!
9. Catch-Up Gear for Alts
Perhaps one of the most anticipated features in every expansion is catch-up gear. We love our alts. We know they may never be as powerful as our mains and that we only have so many hours in the day for make all capped alts as powerful as they can be so that the content our mains have experienced isn’t such a drag when we take our other terribly geared characters through it.
In 9.1, players will be able to use all the Stygia they’ve been collecting to purchase item level 200 gear for their alts! Korthian Armaments can be obtained at Friendly reputation with Death’s Advance, a new faction located in Korthia. Armaments are 1000 Stygia each and include jewelry, trinkets, armor, and weapons!
I’m a sucker for small, seemingly meaningless adventures, and World of Warcraft has never failed to deliver. Thus, hallucinogenic mushrooms have made this list. In Korthia, Invasive Mawshrooms drop a couple of items beneficial to your covenant sanctum and your journey in this zone, but the most notable of these items is the Questionable Mawshroom. These fun ‘shrooms cause players who consume them to hallucinate Maw creatures, including the Jailer who may randomly appear, talk to, and approach you. I welcome anyone to share with me their screenshots and horror stories while wearing this 10 minute buff.
What are you looking forward to the most in 9.1 Chains of Domination?
